India changed my life, what about yours?

This intercultural blog is aimed to be a point of convergence between new and old India travelers, it will allow the new comers to have real experiences available in order to enrich their expectations and make their own contributions. Not only foreign travelers will write and post their pictures, but also will involve the local´s point of view. We have invited a bunch of Indians to collaborate and omment on the travelers’ anecdotes.based on history and cultural background.

Food and Magic

Fabi on her way to the wedding

A weeding in Chile lasts a few hours, in India it goes on for days!

The first day we got there we enjoyed a day ceremony. It was like being in a story-tale. Everything reminded me of the way I had imagined "Aladdin".

I could not believe I was there!! I was so so confused not knowing

what to do or what to say...

It got even more mysterious to me when lunch time came.

We are given a banana leave as plate and no fork nor knife nor spoon. Loads of different flavours, colours and textures were put on it and my hand was my only tool to eat. I had to imitate the people in front of me. It was quite embarrassing to me... :-(

What a wonderful, eco-friendly way to eat! Typically, you would produce so much waste at a wedding -- with the paper napkins, plastic cutlery etc etc. Here, you eat on a leaf that the banana plant produces in abundance and you just wash your hands off at the end of the meal. I swear the food has more flavour when served on a banana leaf!

It is infact believed that serving hot food on a banana leaf actually releases a coating on the banana leaf on to the food, which aids in digestion. Also banana leaf is sometimes used as a wrapper for frying and removed later, this is more for retaining the flavour. So as Neeta said, its an amazing plate to eat your food on :)

I simply LOVE south Indian wedding food!! (ok ok, a lot of people will say that the word "wedding" is redundant!!)

But it's true. The multi course meal (purely vegeterian) served on the banana leaf is simply delicious!

@Fabi - I can imagine that it must have been QUITE an experience for you. Some of my non Hindu friends, who were eating at a wedding for the first time faced difficulties too (not the eating with the hand part ... everyone in India is familiar with that) but with pacing yourself during the meal, keeping enough room for the remaining goodies yet to be served etc... :)
